Despite a difficult six months, Burlington resident Sybil Miller’s year is ending on a high note after winning Hearing Well Matters’ Gift of Hearing, which will provide her with hearing aids and related services for free.

Hearing Well Matters, a local hearing specialist clinic, partnered with hearing aid manufacturing company GN Resound Canada for the Gift of Hearing prize, which was awarded to Miller due to her hearing loss and financial difficulties.

“It’s a life-changing opportunity,” Miller said. “Other than winning my husband’s love some 45 years ago, I’ve never won anything this significant. This is life changing financially, mentally and physically, I’ll be able to hear better and I’m really looking forward to it. I can’t express how much this will change my life and how very grateful we are to Hearing Well Matters.”

The prize includes a set of high-end digital hearing devices as well as hearing testing, hearing aid programming, patient counseling and aftercare services provided by Hearing Well Matters.

Miller has been struggling with with house repairs in their home, and wasn’t expecting such an important prize to land in her lap out of the blue.

“It couldn’t have come at a better time,” she said. “My husband has been ill and our home was in a state of disrepair for the last six months. It was a nightmare to deal with it all, we were in limbo just waiting to hear when things were going to be fixed and getting a hearing kit took a back seat because of the other financial issues.”

Miller spoke about how the hearing aids will give her back some of her independence, as she won’t need to ask people to repeat themselves when out and about on her own.

The Gift of Hearing winner also stressed how grateful she was to both Hearing Well Matters and Rob Hamilton, the founder and owner of the hearing clinic, for his efforts to improve her hearing.

“Rob never gave up on me,” Miller said. “We were faced with all kinds of home issues this year, health problems and a hot water leak that needed to be fixed. I was never able to follow through, but Rob didn’t give up on me. He kept calling to see how we were doing, I’m so grateful.  We’ve been through the wringer for the past five months and we’re wondering if Rob picked up on it somehow, he’s definitely a miracle worker, for sure”

More than 1,000 people have been provided with hearing aids through ReSound’s Gift of Hearing since the campaign started in 2020.
